Settlement breaks that boards misunderstand

Calculator and financial planning documents on a wooden table

Boards hear “reconciliation break” and imagine fraud. Sometimes it is; often it is a timing difference, an unsigned exception, or a weekend batch that never met the weekday pack.

Translate the finding

State the amount band, the age of the open item, the owner, and whether customer balances were affected. That framing turns a scare into an assignable task.

What auditors look for

In payment institution reviews we ask whether breaks have a log, a threshold for escalation, and evidence of closure. Informal chat threads are weak evidence when an examination arrives.

A modest practice

Keep a weekly settlement exception register with columns for date, corridor, amount band, owner, and close date. It is unglamorous and it shortens every later audit for fintech settlement controls.
